A butterfly first
The butterflies and bees really seem to be doing well in our garden this year. I have seen plenty of them, and a couple of new varieties recently. Last week, I luckily spotted a small butterfly in the garden from the house. I went outside to find that it was a Common Blue, one that we haven't seen in our garden before...
Also seen around was the Gatekeeper butterfly, which we see most years (pictured below). Unfortunately, I didn't take a photo of it with its wings open.
Also seen were Large White and Red Admiral. Large White butterflies appear to be everywhere at the moment. Both butterflies pictured above particularly liked the Marjoram flowers. However, other flowers seem to be appearing everywhere (most of which were not planted by us). I took photos of some of them and they are below. The first photo shows a thistle flower which seems to be particularly popular with the bees.
I'm not sure what the flower in the photo below is but it really looked brilliant in the afternoon sun. In the background, you can see the red-orange flowers of the bean plants.
The Veronica plant seems to be very healthy at the moment.
And finally, a quick note on the birds. The feeders have been very busy recently, especially with the tits and sparrows. Today, I saw 10 sparrows feeding on the lawn, which is the most we have ever seen in our garden. Also, Blue, Great, Long-tailed and Coal Tits have been seen frantically feeding. Maybe they are stocking up ready for when they moult? I will leave you with a photo of a pair of Blue Tits which were acrobatically feeding at the end of the garden.
Sunny or not, have a great week :)

Our butterflies have been sort of scarce this year. You have some lovely flowers in your garden Joe. :c)
Nice spot Joe, something I am getting into this year, but they can drive u mad trying to photograph them.
Hey Joe... hope you're enjoying your school hols... my daughter goes back on Wednesday!
Great images from your garden there... fav has to be the first blue. Good to hear you're getting a wide variety of birds still visiting your garden. You've got some great colour in the garden at the moment :-D
Beautiful photos Joe, all so colourful! I have seen the Common Blue and the Gatekeeper while out and about but not in the garden at all, well done! All your flowers look lovely, the mystery flower looks like a member of the Nightshade (Solanum) family to me.
I love the photo of the cheeky looking Blue Tit. Have a great week :)
Plenty of butterflies around this year, which is a joy
Haven't seen a Common Blue yet
Want to swap? say a hundred Commas for one
I agree Joe about the large white, there's everywhere in the South West, counted over 20 on a buddlehia... oh I can never spell that bush.... the other day
Hi again Joe, just popped back as I forgot to say that I, like you, have been remarking on the number of white butterflies around this Summer, I have been saying for weeks now that there are more than usual, I wonder why this should be.
Hello Joe, have you seen Henry Walloon's post about the gatekeeper in his garden - on life on an Oxfordshire lawn? I like your common blue - I saw one early this year, but they certainly don't seem to be common around here...
Some lovely photos again Joe - seems like the butterflies have made a bit of come back especially these last few days - growing a good variety of flowering herbs are also great for the butterflies especially popular here are the clumps of Marjoram or Oregano! Enjoy your weekend - Miranda

A lovely post Joe. Not easy subjects for photographs but you got lucky when they stayed still long enough for a picture. It's great when you get a first for the garden!
Great pictures!
Hi everyone,
