I went yesterday and today to try and get some capture of birds (which I did get a bit of), but there was another visitor at the end of our garden which I didn't expect. A Grey Squirrel was on one of the branches of the apple tree at the end of our garden. It wasn't actually on the bird feeder, which was surprising. I filmed it while it was on the branch, but it scurried off, presumably because of my presence. I thought that would be the last I would see of it, but I heard some rustling in the tree and it came out again with an apple in its paws. Grrr...
It actually stayed there for quite a while but I didn't want to make the clips too long. It is when you get up close to animals like the Grey Squirrel and the Domestic Cat that you realise just how dominative they are. The birds just don't feed while the squirrel is there. The squirrel must be quite strong as it is able to hold the weight of the apple. It also must have had to take the apple off the branch. These creatures won't be beaten. It amused me when it nearly dropped the large apple, but managed to keep it in its grasps.
I wonder if squirrels feed at night. I must say that I have never seen them in the evenings. On the other hand they are much more secretive than the pigeons that actually manage to feed from the bird feeder by perching on the feeder pole. Before I started this blog, one of the squirrels managed to break our previous nut feeder. We have a more squirrel proof one now, so they struggle to get anything out.
It obviously prefers the apples to the sunflower hearts that I put in the feeders and hanging bird table. I have never seen them eat apples before though. I thought that they primarily ate peanuts and other various foods lying on the woodland floor. To be honest we don't harvest the apple tree anyway so it isn't a disaster that the squirrel is eating them, but they don't half make a mess! The one I was watching ate some of the apple and then just dropped it on the floor.
There was a while in our garden when there were no squirells at all, but they have returned again now. They seem to have definate good breeding years and definate bad breeding years. I would really like to get photos of birds feeding on some of the rotten apples that have fallen from the tree. Blackbirds are probably the most likely garden birds to feed on fallen fruit. I guess the videos above are a start, and are squirrels just as bad as we say they are? After all, they are just doing the same thing as the birds. Feeding to survive.
Where to start...

Hi again Joe – great video captures :-)
Grey squirrel sightings in my garden are quite rare but they have visited and I considered adding a feeding box especially for them – but then reconsidered it! I agree they need to eat too but my concern was that it would bring mates and then we (and my neighbours) could have a problem.
Love to hear your garden stories - keep them coming! Sounds like you are really getting into full blogging flow now :-D
Ah… to feeding apples to the birds. I have had great success with them in my garden. I also tried and interesting feeding experiment last year. Perhaps you might be interested in reading some of my back posts with photos and video here , here and here . I will try the experiment again this year once my obelisks are finished with in the borders again.
Throughout the year when we have had apples in the fruit bowl that are past their best I have scattered them on the ground and they have been popular. Some times I quarter them. One warning I would give at this time of year – wasps they love them too. I am guessing the birds have plenty berries on trees to be as keen on the apples at the moment. But when we get to winter and the berries are gone it is a different matter. I have seen blackbirds, blackcaps, blue and great tits having a taste. Enjoy your experiment with feeding apples to the birds :-D
Hi Shirl,
Thanks for the comment. Yes, I thought about putting a feeder box up too, but I am worried that they would go for the bird feeders too.
I might try and chop some apple up and put it on the bird table to see if the birds are interested. I liked your posts on the birds eating apples, especially the Blackbird one.
We have had Blackcaps before but only on the fat feeders. They are quite shy birds.
Thanks again
Joe
Squirrels are not only pesky they are destructive. They chewed the electrical wiring to the pump in my water feature one year. They will tear up most anything to get to a tidbit of food. Sometimes I think they tear up things just for the fun of it.
Other creatures will eat fallen apples. Here we have Opossums and Racooons that come at night to eat the fallen fruit. If we lived where deer came into the garden they would also eat the fallen fruit.
We have butterflies that like the rotting fruit too. Commas, Quetionmarks, Pipevine Swallowtails all nectar on rotting fruit. Of course that would be during the day.
I would think hedgehogs would eat your fallen fruit. Do you have hedgehogs where you live? I am just facinated with those little nocturnal creatures. I wish they were in our area but they don't occur here.
Hi Joe, squirrels are pesky in my garden too, but they sure are entertaining to watch!
I enjoyed your videos. Your squirrels look just like the ones in my backyard. We don't have apples in our yard, but we have lots of different kinds of berries all through the spring and summer that the birds and squirrels feed on.
These little creatures are very agile, and very smart, and often very vexing!
Hi Lisa,
Thank you for leaving a comment and for paying a visit to my blog. I think you are right about the squirrels chewing things to bits just for fun.
Its really interesting to hear about animals from other countries such as your racoons. I would love to know a bit more about them.
Hmm... I have seen posts on blogs about butterflies feeding on rotting apples before. I must look out for them in our garden.
Like Shirl we do have hedgehogs around our area but I must admit that I have never seen them in our garden. I really should stay up late one night and watch the goings on of the garden nightlife.
Thanks again,
Best wishes, Joe
Hi Garden Girl,
Yes I know what you mean. I know that they are annoying for taking the bird seed, but I must admit that they do have a character to admire.
Our squirrels seem to be quite timid and it was surprisingly difficult to video them. I'm glad you enjoyed the videos.
It always amazes me that they are able to climb trees as they do. They also seem to be very strong compared to some other garden amimals.
Thanks again, Joe
